The elected members of Mayo County Council have agreed to hold a special meeting to discuss housing issues in the county in the near future. A number of councillors raised questions over the recent assessment of housing needs that was carried out by the council that saw a number of people removed from the housing list in the county.

Mayo Sports Partnership distributes grants to sports and community groups

At a recent Mayo Sports Partnership Board meeting €19,500 was allocated to 46 clubs/organisations in Mayo through the Partnership's 2016 Special Participation Grant Scheme. Special guest at the presentation event, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development Michael Ring, paid tribute to volunteers involved in sport at all levels throughout the county. “Without volunteers sport in Mayo like every other county would not happen. Its so important that we recognise the hard work of volunteers through initiatives such as the Mayo Sports Partnerships annual small grant scheme,” Minister Ring said.

McDonnell becomes county's first citizen

Fianna Fáil councillor Al McDonnell was elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council for the next 12 months on Monday morning this week at the council's annual general meeting. This is the second time that Cllr McDonnell has been elected as Cathoirleach, having previously worn the chain of office in 1998. The Ballyglass based councillor first became a councillor in 1987 when he replaced former minister and European commissioner Padráig Flynn on the council, and he has been elected to the council in each of the subsequent local elections since.

McLoughlin formally co-opted on to Mayo County Council

Martin McLoughlin was formally co-opted on to Mayo County Council for the remaining three years of the term of the council on Monday afternoon at a special sitting of the council, which was convened to fill the vacancy that arose following the election of Dep Lisa Chambers to the Dáil in February.

Pádraig Pearse Award nomination divides the chamber

The seemingly innocuous matter of Mayo County Council nominating someone for the Pádraig Pearse Award took a long time to get sorted out over the course of two meetings of the local authority this month. Westport based Fianna Fáil councillor Brendan Mulroy has taken over the role of Leas Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council. The first term member of the council was elected to the role from newly elected Fianna Fáil TD Lisa Chambers who had to vacate her council seat following her election to the Dáil at the end of February.

The chief executive of Mayo County Council this week reiterated that the council do not have the finances to buy Westport House and the portion of lands that was put up for sale last week by the owners of the house the Browne family. Council warned West Mayo budget should not be effected because of parking charges

The elected memebrs of the West Mayo Municipal District this week once again insisted that there would be no introduction of on street parking charges in the district and added that the district should not see its budget affected because of their decision not to introduce the charges to the town in the area.

Reshuffle of management in the council to start next month

A reshuffle of the senior management in Mayo County Council will kick in at the start of next month, the chief executive of the council, Peter Hynes, told the elected members of the council at their September meeting this week. The reshuffle will see two new full time directors of services who were appointed recently, Joanne Grehan and Thomas Gilligan, taking over their new roles.
